Chelsea pull ahead of Tottenham in Pedro Porro race

According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Football. London), Chelsea have pulled ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in the race for talented Spanish right-back Pedro Porro from Sporting CP.

Porro is considered one of Tottenham’s main targets in the January transfer window with Antonio Conte identifying the former Manchester City youth star as the reinforcement he needs in the right-back position.

The Portuguese club however have been very adamant about the fact that they want the player’s release clause paid should they want him and are in no mood to negotiate a deal for the talented defender.

Whilst Tottenham are apprehensive about paying the entire release clause, this has emerged as an opportunity for the Blues to flex their financial might. They are apparently willing to pay the release clause and sign Porro.

This has emerged as a blow for Tottenham as the Blues might end up landing the player before they make a decision. The Lilywhites will now know that they have to act fast and either make a proposal or walk away from the deal.

Chelsea are looking at Porro as a backup to the injured Reece James. This means the Spaniard will know that he is unlikely to get regular game time at Stamford Bridge once the English youngster returns.

On the other hand, the existing right-back options at N17 have failed to convince this season. Emerson Royal is very average and Matt Doherty is extremely inconsistent. Djed Spence has not even been given a chance.

Porro will know that if he chose the North of London over the West, he would get much regular game time and also be managed by an elite manager like Antonio Conte. This could sway his decision in favour of us.

For that though, we need to take the punt and match Chelsea’s bid. If we do that, then we can convince Porro to come to N17.
