Ben Jacobs highlights the difference between Tottenham and Chelsea’s pursuit of Pedro Porro
Tottenham have made the signing of Porro their priority for the January transfer window. The talented Spanish right-back is wanted by Antonio Conte and has been identified as the solution to their defensive issues.
The talented 23-year-old is on the radar of Chelsea as well. The West London club are eyeing Porro as a backup for Reece James. The English international is extremely injury prone and the Blues need a replacement.
Porro is a very talented right-back. The former Manchester City youth star has been playing exceptionally well for Sporting CP in the Liga NOS and it comes as no surprise that he is attracting interest from elsewhere.
The Portuguese club want the buying club to pay the release clause. Tottenham are hesitant to pay the fee in its entirety and are looking for ways to sign the player for a cheaper fee. However, the presence of Chelsea does not help.
Here is what Jacobs had to say about the difference in which the two clubs are approaching this situation.
“From Chelsea’s point of view, they would be more likely to explore the number of 45 million Euros but they would not want to trigger the release clause and pay it in one lump sum”
“They would try and establish a structure that is a bit more preferable. The difference between the two clubs is that Tottenham have actually actively gone to the player’s side and discussed prospective terms and got a strong element of buy in”
The fact that Tottenham have already approached the player augurs well for them. This could sway his interest towards North London and if we can agree on a deal with Sporting CP, he might choose to join us.
However, there is still this issue of a release clause. If Chelsea are willing to match it, there is absolutely no doubt that Sporting CP would want to give their player to the Blues and this will hurt Tottenham.
