Glen Johnson believes Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane should join Chelsea instead of Manchester United

Former Chelsea star Glen Johnson while speaking to Betfair (h/t Express) believes Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane should move to Chelsea instead of Manchester United, should he seek a move away.

Kane will be entering the final twelve months of his contract at Spurs after the season ends (Transfermarkt) and if no contract extension is signed by then, there is a big possibility that we could lose our talismanic striker in the summer transfer window.

Manchester United have been touted as one of the destinations with the club making Harry Kane one of the primary targets for their number nine position.

However, Johnson believes it is Chelsea who needs Kane more but concedes it would be difficult for his former club to do a deal, considering the player’s ties with Spurs, also a London club.

“I think pretty much any team would benefit from signing him. Who needs him most right now? Probably Chelsea.

Making a move from Tottenham to Chelsea is a big call but I can’t really see him ending up there if I’m being honest. Let’s face it, if he stays at Tottenham then he’s not winning anything and it would be a shame for a player of his ability to have a career where he doesn’t win anything.

He’s a legend at Tottenham, so would he want to ruin his status by moving to another team in London? I’m not sure. It would probably be easier for him to move to a club outside of London.”

Johnson actually answers his own proposition by admitting that Kane would not risk his status at the club by moving to local rivals Chelsea. Not many have done it in the past and surely many would not follow the path in the future as the move would not sit well with either of the fanbases.

Currently, with the manner and direction in which the club is headed, it is tough to admit the possibility that Kane, who has made over 413 appearances for the club and has scored a mammoth 265 goals could leave the club.

However, it is indeed justified if he does end up leaving as the player has probably exceeded the ambitions that the club is showing. A player of his ilk and ability deserves to have some silverware.

Kane will turn 30 next year and would be aware that he has 3-4 years of playing at the highest level and would want to make the most of it.

On the other hand, he would be keen to break Alan Shearer’s record as the all-time goalscorer of the Premier League. Hence a move to a foreign league might not entice the player that much.

Hopefully, we are able to sort things out and provide Kane with a vision that could persuade him to stay on. A lot has to change for that.
