Cristian Stellini reveals why he is ‘sad’ after Tottenham Hotspur’s January transfer window
Cristian Stellini has said that he is ‘sad’ after Tottenham Hotspur’s January transfer window because Spurs have lost some ‘great’ individuals.
Spurs saw the backs of Djed Spence, Bryan Gil, and Matt Doherty last month. The Englishman was loaned to Stade Rennais, Gil was loaned to Sevilla, and Doherty was allowed to join Atletico Madrid permanently.
It seems that Stellini isn’t the happiest to see them leave. He said at his pre-match press conference (h/t Football.London):
“Matt Doherty, Bryan Gil and Djed Spence are three great players. We were so happy to work with them and we can only say big thanks to them. They are great players but also great guys. Every time I’m sad at this time when the transfer window closes because you lose some players and you have some new.”
“You have this balance to be sad and to be excited to work with these new players. We are excited to work with Pedro Porro and Danjuma and we are sad to lose great guys.”
These three players weren’t of much use to use, in all honesty. Spence and Gil are anyway scheduled to return to N17 this summer and hopefully, they gain good experience overseas.
Doherty’s absence will be compensated by Pedro Porro’s arrival from Sporting CP. Emerson Royal will serve as competition for the 23-year-old former Manchester City full-back but it remains to be seen when our new signing makes his debut and if he will be thrown straight into the action against Manchester City on Sunday.
This was an okay transfer window all things considered. We got the basics done. Arnaut Danjuma can do the job in attack, especially as depth for our four main attackers – Harry Kane, Dejan Kulusevski, Son Heung-min, and Richarlison.

A centre-back wouldn’t have hurt but that is something we should be able to rectify in the summer. As for the trio’s exit, that’s football. Hardly any place for sentiments here but at least two of them are still in it for the long run with us – at least from what it looks like right now.
