Spurs News: Atletico Madrid ‘lose patience’ with Tottenham Hotspur loanee Sergio Reguilon

Tottenham Hotspur sent Sergio Reguilon on a season-long loan deal to Atletico Madrid last summer as they looked to find a readymade replacement for Nottingham Forest-bound Renan Lodi.

He has been anything but that. With just 84 minutes of league football this campaign, Reguilon’s injury-ridden time at the Wanda Metropolitano has frustrated Los Colchoneros.

According to Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo (h/t the Express), Atletico have ‘lost patience’ with the 26-year-old Spanish left-back and want to send him back to Tottenham this summer.

Reguilon arrived at Spurs from Real Madrid in the summer of 2020. He was billed to be one of the best left-backs in the Premier League if he continued to hone his skills on both ends of the pitch.

Reguilon back to Spurs

He is an able attacker and is comfortable with the ball at his feet and while there may be chinks in his armour, he is a decent defender as well. But it seems that he is neither needed at Spurs nor Atletico.

One potential opening for Reguilon at Tottenham could arise if and when Ivan Perisic leaves the club. The Croatia international is 33 and will enter the final year of his contract at the end of the campaign (Transfermarkt).

Manager Antonio Conte clearly didn’t fancy Reguilon considering he let him leave for Atletico and then went on to sign Perisic on a free transfer. The Italian tactician also handed opportunities to youngster Ryan Sessegnon.

These two make up our options on the left-hand side of the pitch, while Ben Davies is also capable of playing there. Atletico Madrid haven’t been shy to look at Tottenham when they need a full-back.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

They signed Matt Doherty on a permanent deal this January. It remains to be seen if the two Tottenham full-backs will be separated yet again at the end of the campaign.
