Tottenham Hotspur warned Harry Kane is now in ‘stronger position’ if he wants to leave

Tottenham Hotspur have been warned by former Spurs player Jamie Redknapp that Harry Kane ‘holds all the cards’ with regard to his future at the club.

Kane has a contract until the summer of 2024. If he doesn’t renew his deal, he will enter the final year of his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season.

Manchester City were famously interested in signing him all the way back in 2021. But a move did not materialise. According to Redknapp, he wasn’t in a strong position to bargain back then considering there were three years left on his contract.

Now, he says that the 29-year-old is in a strong position with regard to negotiating either an exit or a new deal. He told Sky Sports (h/t Evening Standard):

“He’ll know every offer out there, every club that’s interested. They’ll be speaking to his agent, sometimes directly to the players. That’s just how football works. It will come to a head in the summer, one way or another, we will find out Harry Kane’s future.

“Whether he signs a new contract or maybe Tottenham might believe this is a time to cash in. That’s why the move to Man City didn’t happen – he wasn’t in a strong enough position to bargain. Harry Kane now holds all the cards and he’s in a brilliant position.”

Spurs fans won’t want Kane to leave under any circumstances but tough decisions will have to be taken if he doesn’t renew his deal by the end of the campaign.

If it becomes clear he wants to leave, then the sensible thing to do will be to cash in on him and invest the money in a like-for-like replacement. But for that, we would need a financially strong team willing to splash the cash on a player with just a year left on his deal.

He became the club’s all-time top goalscorer after he scored in the 1-0 win against Manchester City this Sunday, taking his tally to 267 goals. He has admitted that the record for most Premier League goals (260 by Alan Shearer) is always on the back of his mind and hopefully, that is enough to keep him at N17 until the end of his playing career.
