Paul Robinson urges Tottenham Hotspur to sign Atletico Madrid shot-stopper Jan Oblak

Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson has urged Tottenham Hotspur to sign Jan Oblak from Atletico Madrid to replace current number one Hugo Lloris.

The French national is in the final years of his career. Over the last few seasons, the 36-year-old has not been at his best for the North London side, making some high-profile errors in between the sticks.

Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Express), Robinson, who spent four years at Spurs, believes the Slovenian shot-stopper could be a great addition to Antonio Conte’s team.

“Oblak would be an incredible signing. I’ve been an admirer of his for a long time. He is the next level of goalkeeper that Spurs need.

Oblak has been a big part of Atletico Madrid’s success over the past few years. I’m surprised that his name does not get linked with more Premier League clubs.”

Oblak signed for Atletico in the summer of 2014 from SL Benfica. After settling in in his debut campaign, the 30-year-old became the first choice for Diego Simeone.

At the Madrid-based club over the years, the Slovenia international has enjoyed a fruitful spell. Los Rojiblancos have given Real Madrid and Barcelona a run for their money in La Liga for some time now.

The Spanish outfit’s shot-stopper has been key to their success. In the current campaign, the 30-year-old has made 29 appearances in all competitions for Atletico, keeping 12 clean sheets.

But Los Rojiblancos have not been at their best this season. Simeone’s team have struggled in the league. They were also knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages.

Lloris will be out for some time due to an injury. Fraser Forster deputised for the French national in between the sticks against Leicester City. However, the 34-year-old was on the receiving end of four goals as the Foxes beat us 4-1.

Tottenham evidently need to sign a new number one in the coming months considering the deteriorating performances of our current shot-stoppers. Oblak has been one of the best in the business for some time now. Hopefully, Spurs will be able to acquire his services next summer.
