Fraser Forster admits he wants to succeed Hugo Lloris as Tottenham Hotspur’s No. 1

The hunt is on at Tottenham Hotspur to find a replacement for 36-year-old Hugo Lloris, and Fraser Forster believes he is up for the task.

The English goalkeeper was signed as a free agent last summer after he ran down his contract at Southampton. When he came in, there were no doubts; he would be the backup to Lloris.

The two-time FIFA World Cup finalist with France has been our undisputed starter ever since he made the move to north London from Olympique Lyonnais in the summer of 2012.

Spurs have been linked with David Raya of Brentford and Everton’s Jordan Pickford as they continue the search for a new long-term No. 1. In a recent interview, Forster was asked if he would want to become Spurs’ new first-choice goalkeeper between the sticks.

Unrealistic

He replied (h/t the Guardian):

“Everyone in football dreams of being the number one at a club of this stature and I would like to do that. Equally, I’m fully aware Hugo is here. I’m very respectful of him and what he’s achieved”

It looks unlikely that this would ever be the case. Surely Spurs won’t be looking to replace Lloris with someone just two years younger than him.

Forster is good. The former Celtics star can be a decent backup goalkeeper for a top team like us, but that is where we should draw the line.

We can use a world-class name between the sticks who can be of service for at least the next five-to-six years. Forster can be a temporary solution if Lloris departs before his contract expires.

But even then, we must ensure that we don’t make any compromises here and look in the market for a top quality name as soon as possible. Forster’s enthusiasm and belief is good to see. But being our No. 1 is perhaps something he shouldn’t really be looking forward to realistically.
