Garth Crooks showers praise on Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero after TOTW inclusion

Former Manchester United player and current BBC pundit Garth Crooks has lavished praise on Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero.

He has labelled the Argentina international as one of the best bit of business Spurs have conducted in recent memory. The Lilywhites signed him from Juventus on an initial loan deal in the summer of 2021.

Then, last summer, they agreed to pay a fee of 55million Euros to make his transfer permanent. No-brainer, given the impact he had in his debut season at the club.

Instantly, Romero’s aggressive style of defending coupled with his immaculate tackling and reading of the game made him an ideal fit for manager Antonio Conte’s side. He is arguably our best defender right now.

Romero was brilliant against Chelsea

Injuries before and after the 2022 FIFA World Cup have restricted him to just 22 appearances across competitions for us this campaign. Whenever he has been out of the team, we have looked weaker in defence.

It isn’t a surprise that he was one of our very best players in a famous 2-0 win in N17 this weekend against Chelsea. Crooks put the 24-year-old in his Team of the Week and wrote on BBC:

“Regular readers will know what a massive fan I am of Romero. The Tottenham defender joined from Atalanta and, as far as I am concerned, is the best signing the club have made for some time. The player has been a revelation since his arrival.”

Romero is indeed one of the best signings we have made in recent memory. He is as important to us in defence as Harry Kane is to us in attack. Romero was also a leading figure in Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup win in Qatar.

There is no doubt that his value would have skyrocketed after that. We got him for a decent price but there is no way we should be looking to cash in on him anytime soon. Instead, Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici have to start working overtime to finalise a move for another world-class defender alongside him. He deserves to play with players who are in and around his calibre.
