Tottenham Hotspur could be joined by Aston Villa in Andre Onana pursuit
A report from Italian outlet CalcioMercatoWeb details Aston Villa’s potential pursuit of Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, who has also been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
As per 90min (h/t Express) last month, Spurs are prioritising signing a new goalkeeper this summer and one of their targets – Onana – has been put up for sale by the club. Now, CMW claims that the Villans could be after the Cameroon international.
They could lose 2022 FIFA World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez, who they believe wants to take a step up in his career and potentially join Manchester United. This may push them in the direction of chasing Onana.
The report also specifies that Inter Milan are eager to sell the former Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper alongside Denzel Dumfries to raise funds before the start of the new season in order to meet FFP regulations.
What should Spurs do?
Spurs shouldn’t have a lot to worry about if the Villans come to the table for Onana. Sure, they are a solid Premier League team with big ambitions and have found the capability to sign big names such as Philippe Coutinho.
But Spurs are a ‘big six’ team and have worked hard over the years to attain that tag. We are set to finish in the top-four at the end of the season barring any hiccups and could offer any new signing UEFA Champions League football.
Aston Villa can’t – not unless they manage to lift themselves heroically from 11th place in the table. Hugo Lloris, 36, sees his contract expire at the end of next season.
Hopefully, Tottenham are willing to offer immediate playing time to any world-class goalkeeper they potentially sign to replace the Frenchman. If not, it could become a problem for big names to play as a No. 2 for us.

Why would Onana warm the bench here when he starts for Inter Milan? While Villa could surely drive up the goalie’s stocks and eventually, his price tag, Tottenham fans would fancy their team’s chances to sign him given their sporting project. Nothing in football is certain, however.
