Tottenham Hotspur want Southampton midfielder James Ward Prowse
According to talkSPORT (h/t Hampshire Live), Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse has been the subject of much transfer speculation recently, with a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur reportedly on the cards.
Ward-Prowse, who has been a mainstay at Southampton for over a decade, has been linked with a move away from the club if they are relegated from the Premier League this season. Tottenham are one of the clubs interested in the midfielder.
It is no secret that Tottenham are in need of reinforcements in midfield with the existing options not really convincing. Ward-Prowse, with his technical ability, leadership skills, and eye for goal, would certainly fit the bill.
One of the midfielder’s main strengths is his set-piece delivery, with his free-kicks and corners consistently causing problems for opposition defences. This is an area where Tottenham have struggled in recent years, with few players able to consistently deliver quality balls into the box.
Ward-Prowse is also an excellent passer of the ball, with a range of short and long passes that can help to unlock opposition defences. His ability to control the tempo of the game and dictate play from midfield could be invaluable to Tottenham, who have often struggled to retain possession in midfield this season.
Perhaps most importantly, Ward-Prowse is a proven leader both on and off the pitch. As captain of Southampton, he has shown time and again that he has the character and determination to inspire his teammates and drive them on to success.
Of course, any move for Ward-Prowse would not come cheap. With Southampton likely to demand a significant fee for their captain, Tottenham would need to be prepared to pay up if they want to secure his signature. However, as talkSPORT’s Darren Ambrose has pointed out, the benefits of signing the midfielder could be enormous.
“I’d take him at Spurs for £ 50 million. I think he’s the perfect player that Spurs need that goes from defence to attack. And he can be that link to the play and I think you’ve got the players that will do the dirty work – the dog work – in terms of [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg and [Oliver] Skipp and players like that”
Not only would Ward-Prowse strengthen Tottenham’s midfield and provide them with a much-needed injection of leadership and quality, but he could also be the key to making the club a competitive beast.
