Tottenham Hotspur leapfrog Barcelona in Sofyan Amrabat race

According to CalcioMercato, Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race for talented Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat despite interest from Spanish giants Barcelona.

The exceptional Moroccan midfielder missed out on a deadline-day move to Barcelona in January as the two clubs could not reach an agreement over the terms of the deal but it now looks like Spurs have pulled ahead.

Amrabat was a relatively unknown name prior to the World Cup in Qatar. However, his performances at the show-piece event meant that the Moroccan became one of the most sought-after players in the world.

Apparently, Barcelona are still interested in the player and have not given up on the opportunity. A move to the Premier League though is exciting the player and this is why Tottenham have gained an advantage.

An interesting option, but do we need him?

Amrabat surely showed his credentials at the World Cup. There is no doubt about his ability to play at the top level. He presents a very interesting option for Tottenham but at this point, he might not be what we need.

This is mainly to do with the kind of game that Amrabat plays. The Moroccan sits deep in midfield, almost like a quasi-centre-back at times. His job is to screen the defence and make sure he stops attacks and distributes the ball forward.

Do we really need Amrabat?

Tottenham have enough profiles in their squad to do just this. Pierre Emile Hojbjerg is one of the best in this regard and he is doing a commendable job at the club. The likes of Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma, Oliver Skipp and Pape Matar-Sarr can all perform this role to varying degrees.

What we actually need is a creative presence, someone who can contribute in terms of goals and assists and link the aforementioned players with the dynamic attack that we have. Amrabat is not that player.

Hence, unless the Moroccan is available at a price that is unbelievable to refuse, we must not be looking to make this signing. Let’s see what we eventually decide.
