Tottenham Hotspur leading the race for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya

Tottenham Hotspur are seemingly ahead in the race to sign Brentford’s David Raya, with the player’s camp believing that the Spanish goalkeeper is very high on the club’s wish-list to replace Hugo Lloris.

The French goalkeeper, of course, is on a contract that expires in 2024 and is already at the dusk of his playing days at the age of 36. He could, as a result, needs urgent replacing in the starting XI.

Raya, 28, has rejected any proposal from Brentford regarding a new contract, which, of course, plays in the favour of his suitors. Bailey exclusively told TeamTalk:

“David Raya has made it clear to Brentford that he will not sign a new contract and wants to leave. I am told there is a major disappointment within the corridors of power at the GTech, but it is not done and dusted. They will allow him to leave, though only if the price is right.

“I don’t know if that is analytics-based or not, it could be, but Brentford would be open to keeping him and seeing him leave on a free in 2024. Brentford will not be allowing Raya to just leave, unless they get a significant fee. Raya’s people remain confident that the interest in him will see a bid come in from a big club. They believe he is very high on Tottenham’s wish-list to replace Hugo Lloris.”

If we really do want Raya, there are two ways we can approach it. We can either tempt Brentford to sell the player in the summer and sign him.

Or, we can wait for another year and then go for him as a free agent next year. If Raya has made it clear to the Bees that he doesn’t want a new deal, then we can regret paying a big fee this summer knowing we could have paid nothing to sign him at the end of next season.

Spurs should, however, make sure they get a new goalkeeper this summer itself. Lloris has looked past his best self recently and we cannot wait around so that other clubs can beat us to the race for our transfer targets.

The 28-year-old is in the prime years of his career and the trip from Brentford to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium won’t be that long as well. This deal makes a lot of sense on paper.
