Liverpool and Chelsea join the race for Tottenham’s managerial target Luis Enrique
According to Spanish publication Fichajes, Liverpool and Chelsea have joined Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique.
It is no secret that Tottenham are on the lookout for a new manager. Antonio Conte does not seem to have much time left in the hot seat at N17 and it will not be the biggest surprise even if he was sacked by the time this article comes out.
Chelsea and Liverpool’s desperation for a new manager shouldn’t be as much as Tottenham’s. The Blues can give Graham Potter a long rope at the helm and rightfully so, considering how good he can be.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have Jurgen Klopp at the helm since November 2015 and it would be a huge, huge surprise if they sack him after just one poor season. That, of course, doesn’t include the possibility of Klopp leaving himself.
The German manager has done enough to warrant such trust and Enrique is just an option they have. Klopp still has over three years left on his contract at Anfield which he signed just last year in April.
Grass root issues
Tottenham’s problems run much deeper than just a managerial change and just appointing Luis Enrique will not solve anything. Yes, the Spaniard is a great manager but he cannot turn things overnight.
We must not forget that our last two managerial appointments – Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte are two names who have won trophies wherever they have been throughout their career until they came here.
Even after being sacked here, Mourinho has gone to Roma and really rebuilt that team. He led to the Europa conference league last season and they find themselves in a good spot to try and challenge for the Europa league this time around.
Yes, Enrique is someone who can do wonders with the squad at his disposal. He does need players who will suit his philosophy though. Tottenham must be willing to back him in the transfer market for the same.
