Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma and Juventus among clubs eyeing Morten Hjulmand

Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund and AS Roma have all been named as potential suitors for Lecce captain Morten Hjulmand, who is valued at around €15million, as per Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb.

Jose Mourinho left Spurs a while back but he can still spoil their plans to land the 23-year-old defensive midfielder if Roma firm up their interest in the player. The thing is, Premier League clubs can afford to onboard the wage demands of most players in world football.

But in this case, interest from Serie A clubs could mean a situation where Hjulmand will not have to pack up his bags and fly out of Italy. He has settled in well in Serie A.

He has made 85 appearances for Lecce since joining them from Admira Wacker in January 2021. The Danish midfielder is already their skipper but his contract does run out at the end of next season (Transfermarkt).

Many options for Hjulmand

A move to any of the aforementioned clubs would represent a step up for him in terms of the level and quality of teammates he will be playing with. That is with all due respect to I Salentini, who are hovering just above the relegation zone in 15th.

If they drop to Serie B, Spurs, along with other interested parties can hope to have their tasks made easier when it comes to signing Hjulmand. Tottenham should, however, worry about interest from Juventus and Roma.

The former are apparently set to lose Adrien Rabiot this summer while Leandro Paredes will return to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) after a poor season on loan. Roma, meanwhile, could need a new midfielder soon as well.

34-year-old Nemanja Matic’s contract expires this summer while Mady Camara and Giorginio Wijnaldum could return to their respective parent clubs at the end of their loan spells at the end of the season (Transfermarkt). These two teams can, hence, offer Hjulmand a real shot at playing time.

Tottenham must therefore put across a good financial offer and promise Hjulmand playing time on a regular basis considering we already have the world-class pairing of Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. This will be a tough race but hopefully, the potential draw of playing in the Premier League is enough to lure him to N17.
