Feyenoord told to hand Arne Slot a ‘blank cheque’ to fend off Tottenham Hotspur interest

Tottenham Hotspur are on the lookout for a new permanent manager to replace Antonio Conte, who left by mutual consent last month, and Feyenoord’s coach Arne Slot has been touted as a name.

ESPN’s Dutch football analyst Kenneth Perez, however, believes that while Spurs can come in for him in the summer, Feyenoord must protect him if they want sustained success. As relayed by FR12.nl, via SportWitness (h/t Football.London), Perez said:

“This trainer has made the whole difference at Feyenoord. They still say, ‘We’re doing really well.’ And that’s okay. The league remains the best prize. Then you are not only champion, but you also get much further as a club, because you see all those millions pouring in.

“…Are you going to offer Arne Slot a huge contract, which has never been seen in the Netherlands, or are you betting that you invest more in players and then with another trainer? As a policymaker at Feyenoord, I would rather spend €10-15m on three years of Slot than invest it in three or four new players. In fact, you should give him a blank cheque.”

Slot is a 44-year-old Dutch coach who joined Feyenoord in the summer of 2021. He has really made a difference at the Rotterdam-based outfit this season and has led his team to an eight-point lead over Ajax at the top of the table after 28 games.

What should Spurs do?

This could be a historic title for the Dutch giants. But as recent history has shown, Eredivisie has become the breeding ground of some of football’s best young talents.

They often outgrow the Dutch division and move for greener pastures – managers included, as we saw with Erik ten Hag. Hence, Spurs coming in for Slot would be somewhat of an upgrade for the Dutchman in terms of the size of the club he could be joining.

A fresh tactical approach is what we need in N17 after a strenuous spell with Antonio Conte. Cristian Stellini will be the club’s interim boss until the summer with Ryan Mason as his assistant.

But then, we will have to take a call. Perez is, of course, right in suggesting that Feyenoord would prioritise keeping Slot even if it means investing a big sum in him. Spurs’ job should be to ensure that doesn’t happen and put forth an exciting proposal he can’t refuse.
