Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez ruled out for Tottenham Hotspur clash

Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of landing a UEFA Champions League have been handed a boost after news of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane’s injury for Manchester United.

As unfortunate as it may have been for the Red Devils duo, Spurs would feel they now have a sort of an advantage in the remaining games of the season when it comes to the battle for the fourth spot.

According to David Ornstein of the Athletic, Martinez is set to miss the remainder of the season with a foot injury he suffered in his team’s 2-2 UEFA Europa League draw against Sevilla on Thursday.

He was stretchered off the pitch in the dying embers of the game, which reduced United to 10 men and saw them concede a Harry Maguire own goal in the 90th minute. Varane could also be out for the campaign.

Boost for Spurs

However, Manchester United are hoping that it is not the case. The two centre-backs have been Erik ten Hag’s go-to choice in central defence.

Martinez will miss the Premier League clash between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur on April 27 in N17. One would imagine Varane will also not be fit to take part against Spurs.

That will leave the Dutchman with no option but to play Maguire and Victor Lindelof – both not his first choice at the back – in central defence. Luke Shaw can also play as a left-sided centre-back if need be.

The Lilywhites have 53 points from 30 games and are in fifth position. The Red Devils, meanwhile, have three points more and a game in hand. If Spurs win against them, it will blow the top-four race wide open.

More than that, the Manchester-based giants will also feel the effects of their star centre-backs’ absence in other games.
