Sporting CP looking to use Manuel Ugarte in talks with Tottenham to reduce Marcus Edward sell-on clause

According to Portuguese publication O Jogo, Sporting Lisbon are looking to use Manuel Ugarte as a pawn in their negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur to reduce Marcus Edwards sell-on clause.

The young winger left Spurs in 2019 and has since impressed during his time in Portugal, with many top clubs across Europe reportedly monitoring his progress. He could be moving on in the summer.

However, Tottenham currently hold a 35% sell-on clause for Edwards, which could make any potential transfer fee significantly higher. Sporting CP are said to be looking at ways to reduce this sell-on clause, with Manuel Ugarte emerging as a potential bargaining tool.

The Uruguayan midfielder has been linked with a move to Spurs in recent weeks, with many fans excited at the prospect of the talented youngster joining the club. However, due to the lack of a permanent manager, Tottenham are unable to progress with negotiations.

Once a new boss is appointed, it is likely that Spurs will step up their pursuit of the 22-year-old, who has been one of Sporting’s standout performers this season. This is where the Portuguese club are trying to play smart and help themselves in the Edwards deal.

Sporting are said to be keen to limit the amount of money they would lose to Spurs if Edwards was sold, and are looking to put together a similar proposal to the one which saw Pedro Porro leave in January.

On the face of it, this could be a good move for all parties involved. Sporting would limit their financial exposure if Edwards were to be sold, while Tottenham would still receive a cut of any transfer fee. More so, we could also land Ugarte.

Meanwhile, Spurs would get their hands on a talented young midfielder who could play a key role in their squad next season. When a move benefits all parties, it is best to take it and move on.

Of course, there are no guarantees that a deal will be done, and negotiations between the two clubs could prove tricky. However, this does not sound like a bad idea after all.
