Tottenham considering a summer move for Matteo Guendouzi
According to French journalist Mohamed Toubache-Ter, Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly contemplating a move for former Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.
Guendouzi’s journey in English football began in 2018 when he made his move to Arsenal from Lorient. His early days at the Emirates Stadium showed great promise, with his talent really catching the eye.
However, his time at Arsenal took an unexpected turn when he found himself frozen out of the first-team picture due to rumoured disagreements with manager Mikel Arteta. He was eventually shipped out.
Despite the setbacks in North London, Matteo Guendouzi managed to revive his career during a successful loan spell at Marseille in the 2021-22 season. Impressing the fans and pundits alike, he showcased his abilities on the pitch and earned himself a permanent move to the French giants’ last summer.
Now, the 24-year-old’s performances at Orange Velodrome have caught the attention of several Premier League clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites, however, may face fierce competition from Newcastle United and Aston Villa, who are also said to be interested in Guendouzi’s signature.
Nevertheless, one cannot ignore the question marks surrounding Guendouzi’s attitude and behaviour. While there have never been doubts about his quality on the field, concerns about his potential disruptive influence in the dressing room persist.
The decision to pursue Guendouzi’s signing should not be taken lightly by Spurs. It is crucial for the club to assess whether the midfielder has matured as a person and left his disciplinary issues behind him.
While the Frenchman’s price tag may not be exorbitant, it is essential for Tottenham to evaluate the player’s value beyond the monetary aspect. Investing in a player who may destabilize the team’s harmony could prove to be detrimental in the long run.
