Dean Jonebelieves Tottenham will keep Richarlison as their number nine if Kane leaves
Speaking to Football FanCast, Dean Jones has voiced his concerns regarding Tottenham Hotspur’s potential decision to sell Harry Kane and rely on Richarlison as his replacement.
Jones believes that such a move would be a “massive risk” for the club. Richarlison’s debut season at Tottenham has been far from impressive since his high-profile transfer from Everton last summer, scoring only once in the Premier League and three times in all competitions.
The Brazilian forward has struggled to secure a regular starting position, finding himself behind Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski, and the prolific Harry Kane in the pecking order. Despite his current difficulties, there is still hope that Richarlison can rediscover his form.
His previous performances for Everton and the Brazilian national team have demonstrated his qualities as a fantastic striker. Perhaps the lack of success at Spurs can be attributed to the team’s style of play under former manager Antonio Conte.
It is plausible that under a new manager and with an attacking style of play, Richarlison could flourish once again and prove his worth at Tottenham. We have seen such situations happen in the past.
However, while recognizing the Brazilian’s potential and the impact of a change in tactics, Dean Jones expressed his concerns about using Richarlison as a direct replacement for Harry Kane if the English striker departs in the summer.
In an interview with Football FanCast, Jones explained
“I think it’d be a massive risk to go with Richarlison as your number nine if you’re not replacing Harry Kane when he leaves. But at the same time, Richarlison’s not a bad player; he just hasn’t had a good first year.”
He believes there is still a chance for Richarlison to find his stride and prove his worth. However, if Tottenham were to rely on him as their main striker, adjustments would need to be made to the team’s setup and style of play.
