Alasdair Gold: Tottenham Hotspur were keeping tabs on James Maddison since he was at Coventry City
Football.london journalist Alasdair Gold is one of the top names in the field regarding Tottenham Hotspur and he has now revealed the extent to which the club kept tabs on James Maddison over the years.
The English international moved to the N-17 last summer and has instantly staked a claim as one of the best signings of the window. It is fair to say that Spurs need to be given credit for acting quickly and decisively to land themselves a key player.
Speaking on the player, Gold has now revealed that Maddison has been on Tottenham’s radar for a long time now. The 26-year-old spent his youth years at Coventry City before becoming a household game in the Premier League.
Spurs were aware of Maddison’s potential since his stint at The Sky Blues. However, a deal couldn’t be agreed thanks for some reason or other. It might have played out a bit, but thankfully, we have our man now. Speaking to Chronicle Live, Gold has revealed that Maddison has been, in fact, a long-term target.
“Tottenham have looked at James Maddison for years, since his Coventry days, but for one reason or another never managed to close a deal for him and others reaped the benefits.”
Newcastle United were also in the fray for Maddison but ultimately refused to fork out what was needed to land him from Leicester City. Their loss is our gain and we will shed no tears for Newcastle’s regrets.
In many ways, Maddison is our best player in the role since Christian Eriksen left Tottenham in 2020. The creative inspiration from midfield adds a new dimension to Ange Postecoglou’s attack.
