James Maddison believes Tottenham Hotspur signed him last summer for his creativity
James Maddison has proven himself to be a sensational player for Tottenham Hotspur since arriving from relegated Leicester City earlier in the summer.
The English international has taken to life in North London like a fish to water and is already a key player for Ange Postecoglou. There is actually a case to be had that the 26-year-old is the best signing of the summer transfer window.
Primarily a number 10, Maddison has two goals and five assists in nine appearances for Tottenham across all competitions. This has aided us in the rise to the top of the Premier League standings with eight games played.
Tottenham have not had a proper number 10 since Christian Eriksen called it quits in North London in 2010. The fact that we still remained competitive in the attack was a testament to how good Harry Kane and Son Heung-min were leading the line.
With the English skipper now no longer at the club, a new direction was needed. Bringing in Maddison helps us return to a more traditional style, albeit with much impact. The Spurs frontline is far more fluid now and has different avenues to probe opposition defences.
Speaking to the Evening Standard ahead of England’s friendly against Australia, Maddison shed light on the trait that made Tottenham splash the cash on him last summer. It is fair to say his revelation is backed up by the stats on the pitch.
“I’m working as hard as I can. And then bringing the qualities to the team I know I possess: the creative side, which is why Tottenham bought me.”
England boss Gareth Southgate also admitted that Maddison excels in the number ten’s role. It is clear to see where the 26-year-old’s strengths lie and Postecoglou deserves credit for getting the most out of him this season.
“If we play with an outright 10, it suits him even better, so he is adaptable. He is an intelligent footballer. I think the most impressive thing is that he is always affecting matches with great chances, scoring goals, creating assists.”
The Spurs star started the friendly against Australia earlier today and played 73 minutes before being taken off for Phil Foden. He donned the number 10’s role and did not enjoy the best of games. Hopefully, it will be better when the Three Lions take on Ukraine for their UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier next.
