Wales skipper and Tottenham star Ben Davies reflects on crucial UEFA Euro qualifier win vs Croatia
Wales will be aiming to make it to a third straight European Championship in a row and skipper Ben Davies was visibly thrilled by his nation’s impressive 2-1 win over Croatia on Sunday night.
The win takes the Dragons to the second spot in Group D, ahead of Croatia on goal difference. With just two games to go, the Welsh players will be keen to retain the position and book a place in next summer’s tournament in Germany.
Wales next face minnows Armenia before facing Group D leaders Turkey on the final match day. The latter game represents the bigger challenge and it remains to be seen if their opponents will take the foot off the gas should they already guarantee qualification by then.
Speaking after the game, Davies has openly admitted via X that the result was a big one for Wales. However, he refuses to get carried away and is already eyeing to make the most of the remaining games.
“It’s a big result for us. Our backs were against the wall, we knew what we had to do coming into the game. It’s a big night but it won’t mean anything if we don’t keep it up.”
Wales certainly had their backs against the walls. But Harry Wilson’s double gave the home side a massive win that could have major repercussions as to their plans next summer.
Wales qualified for the Euros for the first time in their history in 2016, going all the way to the semifinal stage. They returned for the 2020 edition but were unable to get beyond the first knockout round.
Having fallen at the group stage in last year’s FIFA World Cup, Wales will be keen to improve this time around. The win over a superior Croatian side is certainly a morale booster but will matter for little unless they can make it count.
