James Maddison gives verdict on Tottenham’s new captain Son Heung-min
Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min truly is one of the ‘nice guys’ in football. He is never in the headlines for the wrong reasons, always plays with a smile on his face, and has a brilliant bond with the fans.
He always takes out time to thank the fans after the games, motivates his teammates on the pitch, and treats his opponents with respect. The latter is something James Maddison says he experienced during his time at Leicester City.
Speaking in a recent interview, Maddison, who joined Spurs from the relegated Foxes this summer, said via the Daily Mail:
“He’s just naturally a nice guy, you know? He’s someone you just want to give a big hug to every time you see him in the morning! Luckily, I get to do that. I know a lot of Spurs fans would love to give him a hug in the morning.
“Even when I was at Leicester, I didn’t know him at all, but he’d come up to me after the game and we’d shake hands, and he’d give me a hug and be complimentary about me as a player. He doesn’t have to do that and I see him doing that with other people. He gives his time to people.”
Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich in August left Spurs searching for a new captain because he was the natural successor to Hugo Lloris, with the Frenchman evidently falling down Guglielmo Vicario in the pecking order.
Spurs have the right man in charge
Son was Ange Postecoglou’s choice, with Maddison becoming the vice-captain. It has proven to be a great decision. Players seem to respond well to the 31-year-old and why wouldn’t they? There is nothing to dislike about him…
Maddison went on:
“He’s a warm person to be around and a fantastic captain because he leads by example. With him as your captain, you don’t want to let him down because he’s such a good guy and has such high standards. It’s infectious for the group. I can’t speak highly enough of Sonny. He’s a great captain and a great friend.”
Son is a living legend at Spurs. It will be a dream scenario if he leads us to a trophy in his debut season as skipper. We will gain a two-point lead after nine games if we beat Fulham on Monday.

Taking it one game at a time, as cliched as it sounds, is the way to go. We have the right man in charge and if and when he is sidelined for any reason, Maddison is more than capable to step in and lead the squad. The two Tottenham’s stars leadership qualities have been a very underrated aspect about them in their careers. Now, it is there for all to see.
