Journo says it would be a ‘surprise’ if Tottenham Hotspur are actually interested in Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips
Journalist Paul Brown believes it would be a surprise if Tottenham Hotspur actually moved for Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips in the near future.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Sun), Spurs are interested in signing the England international, who is struggling for playing time at Man City. Given his talent, age, and transfer fee (he was signed for £45million from Leeds United in 2022), Phillips’ future seems to lie away from the Etihad.
Brown, however, believes Tottenham may not be the destination. He thinks their midfield is functioning well at the moment. The journalist told GiveMeSport:
“I think Phillips could easily play for any of the top clubs in the Premier League. He’s wasted not getting a game at Man City. I think he’s one of the most talented midfielders in the Premier League, and he showed that at Leeds.
“The Spurs midfield doesn’t appear to need much of an upgrade. It’s functioning pretty well. It has a nice balance, and Postecoglou is getting a tune out of the players in there. So, it might be a surprise if they go for Phillips.”
What next for Spurs and Phillips?
Phillips is a full England international and he was a star in the Three Lions’ journey to the 2020 UEFA Euros final. Clearly, he has the talent to flourish on the big stage.
One would think that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s potential January transfer could open up a place in our team. Of course, it will, but would that be for a player like Phillips?
He is already struggling for playing time so one would imagine that his next destination, if he does decide to move, would be at a club where he plays more often. The 27-year-old is still in his prime years.

But Hojbjerg isn’t a starter under Ange Postecoglou to begin with. Sure, Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma’s mini-absence due to AFCON next year will leave a gaping hole in the starting XI, but in the long term, it seems hard to imagine where Phillips would fit into Postecoglou’s starting XI unless there is a change in tactic.
