A lot of people have been shocked by Richarlison being snubbed from Brazil’s squad for Copa America 2024. The 27-year-old had a respectable campaign with Tottenham this season and people believe his performances warranted a selection to the Brazilian team.
Richarlison has made 31 appearances for the Lilywhites this season recording a total of 12 goals and four assists. While he hasn’t exactly been world-class, he at least deserved to be picked as a backup.
Most likely, he would’ve been picked if it wasn’t for the injury he picked up recently. The Brazil coach cited that as the reason behind not picking the 27-year-old. Let’s have a look at what he had to say. (h/t Fabrizio Romano)
“Richarlison has not been called up for the Copa América also due to fresh injury he has suffered”.
“He’s not available, he had new injury and this is why he’s not in the list”
So, If Richarlison had been fit he would’ve made it to the final team. He’s not the only Premier League player who didn’t get a call. Manchester United’s Casemiro and Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus were also left out of the final list.
The 27-year-old’s peers, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, Raphinha and Gabriel Martinelli have all been called up. While the reason behind him being left out is understandable Richarlison will surely be feeling the sting of it.
However, something good might come out of this, his snub could serve as a newfound motivation for the 27-year-old. It might even help him get back to his goal-scoring ways with Tottenham Hotspur.
While Brazil competes for glory in Copa America 2024, Richarlison will be watching from home.
