Tottenham Hotspur suffered blows to their Champions League qualification as Manchester City got better of the North Londoners at White Hart Lane yesterday night, and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville didn’t hold back on the performance of the Spurs star.
The Lilywhites had all hopes ablaze when the Cityzens visited N17 in a late Tuesday kick-off; a win could have given them a shot at Champions League qualification on the final matchday of the season. However, as many Tottenham faithful hoped for, the club suffered a defeat as the visitors had enough to get over the line with two goals in the second half.
While City were playing far from their best, Tottenham failed to take advantage of the advantage of the opportunities coming their way. The hosts conceded their first goal in the 51st minute when Bernardo Silva put through Kevin De Bruyne, who received ahead of Spurs January signing Radu Dragusin, squaring for Erling Haaland, who tapped it in.
In the build-up to the goal, however, the Spurs Argentine defender lost a 50-50 with Phil Foden, which helped City gain momentum in their sequence that eventually compounded into a goal. Gary Neville was furious about the duel that the former Atalanta defender lost and was vocal about it on Sky Sports after City went 1-0 up.
The Manchester United legend, speaking on Sky Sports, said, “How many times have we seen that over the years?
“Romero losing the 50-50 to Foden’s not good enough, and then we all know what’s coming. pass into the channel before De Bruyne squares it. That’s a huge moment in this season.”
Romero has been complementing Micky van de Ven for most of the season; however, yesterday his antics had a big part to play in a goal that kicked Spurs out of the top-four race. It is in these high-octane moments where better players stand up, and while Romero has done that over his time at N17, yesterday matters, and Neville is right in his verdict.
For now, that’s the season curtain for Tottenham, irrespective of how the final matchday goes.
