Maddison snubbed! Tottenham star left out of England's Euro 2024 squad.
With the season at White Hart Lane concluded, eyes now turn to the upcoming European Championship in Germany as the Three Lions look to bring football home this summer; however, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison will not be a part of the England squad, much to the disappointment of many fans.
The North Londoners made a headline transfer when they acquired midfielder James Maddison from Leicester City in the summer transfer window. He fitted into life in the N17 pretty seamlessly, as everything that Spurs did came through him in the premier half of the campaign, and suddenly the 27-year-old was among conversations as one of the key players driving the team’s success.
Albeit his success on the field did not last for a marathon period, he was soon ruled out with injury troubles, and his performances fell off when he got back from the sidelines. This resulted in the Tottenham boss benching him, and conversations soon shifted to whether he would be traveling to Germany with the English squad this summer. It turns out he will not.
Multiple fan groups have been left fuming as the 27-year-old was not included in Gareth Southgate’s final squad for the summer window. Former Tottenham forward Alan Brazil acknowledges that it is strange to leave him out of the squad, given Maddison’s impact and form throughout the season.
He went on to criticize the call to call up a mighty 33 players initially before churning it down to twenty-six.
In an interview with talkSPORT following news of Madison not being called up, Alan said:
“What do you make of this? I find this strange,” says Brazil about Maddison being left out of the squad.
“Is Jude going to play? It’s horrible. I don’t know why they take so many (on having a 33-man squad before cutting it down to 26). Even one extra isn’t good unless they take a young kid and say, ‘I am giving you a bit of experience here’.
“These modern-day footballers, right, is it really important ‘I got 27 caps or I got 47 caps?’ I think if you play for your country at a big tournament, it’s great. I like his spirit. When he is on his game, ‘give me the ball’. I do like him as a player.”
There are ample creative outlets at England’s disposal this summer, and one of them had to be left out—this happened to be James Maddison. On a positive note for Tottenham, the former Leicester City star would have much-needed rest ahead of next season.
