Luton Town join Millwall in the race to sign recently released Tottenham academy graduate

Japhet Tanganga is thought to be on plenty of clubs’ radars after being released by Tottenham Hotspur

According to Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, Luton Town has entered the competition to secure Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Japhet Tanganga. Tanganga, who spent the latter part of the previous season on loan at Millwall, made a significant impression there, prompting the Lions to pursue another agreement to bring him back to The Den.

Initially signed to a long-term contract in 2020, it seemed unlikely that Tanganga would leave Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on a free transfer until next year. However, he is set to be released on June 30th, offering numerous teams the opportunity to acquire him without a transfer fee, a prospect that many clubs will be eager to exploit.

While the Lions have a strong chance of securing Tanganga due to their prior loan arrangement, they might face stiff competition from other clubs vying for the defender’s signature. Journalist Thomas reports that several other Championship clubs, including Luton, are interested in Tanganga. A move to this division could offer him more playing time than he experienced at Spurs.

Despite ongoing talks between the Lions and Tanganga about a permanent deal, an agreement has yet to be reached. This delay has allowed other clubs the opportunity to make offers for the player if they wish to do so.

Deciding between staying in England or moving to Italy will pose a challenge for Tanganga if he receives offers from teams in both countries. Opting for a permanent move to The Den could be enticing for him, considering the ample game time he enjoyed and his familiarity with life there.

Similarly, a move to Kenilworth Road might not be out of the question, given Luton’s proximity to London. Moreover, with Luton having a promising chance of contending for promotion again next season, such a move could be advantageous, though he would need assurances regarding playing time. However, if Tanganga can excel in Serie A and secure significant minutes on the pitch, it wouldn’t be surprising if he eventually returns to the Premier League.
