Tottenham insider excepts one Spurs outcast to join Championship club this summer
The EFL Championship club are one step closer to signing Welsh defender Joe Rodon from Tottenham Hotspur. Leeds have already expressed their wish to Spurs after Rodon’s glorious last campaign at Elland Road, per Tottenham Hotspur News.
The Welsh international has appeared in 50 games for Leeds in the latest campaign after coming to the West Yorkshire club on loan. Leeds have only conceded 43 goals in the last Championship season, and 26-year-old Rodon was one of the people who played a crucial role in the achievement for the club.
Leeds failed to secure the Premier League spot by losing the playoff to Southampton last month. The West Yorkshire club, who was planning to sign Rodon on a permanent deal for a long time, missed the initial chance after the playoff loss. Journalist John Wenham revealed that Leeds are still alive in the race to sign the defender.
“I do still think Rodon will join Leeds, but it won’t be as straightforward as it could have been. It will rely on other players being sold first whereas I think the bid would have already gone in had they been promoted.”
Wenham said, Leeds initial plans to bid for the player were changed due to concerns regarding the club’s financial situation. The club need to balance their books to obey the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR).
But now the club has decided to retain the player at any cost, and they believe the player who played a major part in their march to Wembley for the playoff in the last campaign can also take them to the Premier League in the coming campaigns. Before bidding for Rodon, they need to sell some of their players so they can find money to sign the Welsh player.
Tottenham has extended Rodon’s contract for another twelve months, so the North Londoners can expect a fair transfer fee for the defender’s move. Rodon was not included in the plan of Ange Postecoglou, so the club will accept the better deal for Rodon’s move. Most of the Premier League clubs are expected to complete a major part of their signings before June to balance the Premier League financial rules.
