Report: Tottenham involved in unlikely transfer battle with Barcelona for highly-rated Championship star

Tottenham Hotspur set to compete with Barcelona for Hull City youngster Jaden Philogene

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are showing concrete interest in signing talented Hull City winger Jaden Philogene, with Barcelona and West Ham United also keeping an eye out on the 22-year-old.

Philiogene is a young English forward who impressed in the Championship for Hull City last season. The 22-year-old scored 12 goals and six assists in 33 games across all competitions for the Tigers, who finished seventh and just missed out on a playoff spot.

The England U-21 international is primarily a left-winger who likes to cut onto his favoured right foot. That said, he can also do a pretty decent job as a traditional winger when played on the right and contribute with crosses into the box.

Philogene has a contract with Hull City until 2026, although the club have the option to extend it by a solitary year (Transfermarkt). With less than two years remaining on his current deal, his value would only keep dipping going forward.

When clubs like Barcelona and Tottenham come calling, it is very difficult for a young player to reject such approaches. Hence, it will be a huge surprise if Philogene chooses to remain with Hull City for the next season.

How will Philogene fit in at Tottenham?

Currently, Tottenham have their captain Son Heung-min who prefers playing on the left side of the attack. They also have the likes of Manor Solamon and Bryan Gil who are left-wingers by trade. Richarlison can also do a job when called upon.

However, Son is 31 years old, will turn 32 next month and might not have many years left at the top of the game. Bryan Gil’s future at the club is not certain, with links of an exit circulating in recent weeks.

Solomon missed the majority of last season with injuries and we do not know if he can be reliable going forward. Richarlison would prefer to play in his natural number nine role. Thus, the left wing is a position that Spurs must be looking to reinforce ahead of next season.

At just 22, Philogene has the entirety of his football career ahead of him and if he continues developing at a similar rate, the sky is the limit. Tottenham must look to sign him before he gets too expensive. Considering the fact that Ange Postecoglou places immense trust in youth, this is a signing that Spurs must look to get over the line as soon as possible.
