Tottenham receive massive boost as 31-year-old superstar close to agreeing new deal

Tottenham Hotspur receive a massive boost as captain Son Heung-min is closing in on agreeing a new deal

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur fans can breathe easy as captain Son Heung-min is closing in on agreeing a new contract with the club with improved wages.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness, speaking to the above-mentioned source is confident that the North London club will be able to tie down their star player to a new contact. His current deal runs until 2025, which is less than 12 months away.

Since Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane left the club last summer, Son Heung-min has stepped up and taken on the mantle of the superstar. His performances last season were exceptional for the majority although there seemed to be a dip late on.

The Tottenham Hotspur #7 scored 17 goals and provided 10 assists in 36 appearances across all competitions last season. He had to leave midseason though to represent his country in the Asian Cup. Upon his return, Son struggled to find the same kind of fluency in front of the goal, although that might be a reflection of the team’s struggles as a whole in the second half.

Under Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham are striving to achieve some stability, a key aspect of most successful teams around the world. This stability needs to transpire from the top and where better place to start than the captain committing his future to the club?

Speaking about the situation to the aforementioned Football Insider source, here is what Keith Wyness had to say

“I do think they’ll increase his wages, but I don’t think it will be a big increase. In terms of his valuation, I think he’s still got to be worth around the £100million mark despite having a pretty poor season. Hopefully he can come back refreshed, and understand better what Ange Postecoglou wants from him – and hopefully Ange will get the tools to build the squad and formation around him a bit more. Spurs want to be free-scoring, that’s the message from the manager – and Son is key to that. I think Tottenham will want to tie him down to another two-year contract.”

What next for Spurs?

Getting Son to commit his future to the club is a big deal and let’s hope the parties involved can get the deal over the line officially really soon. It is a great place to start the summer if you are Ange Postecoglou.

What next for Tottenham and Son Heung-min

Under the Australian tactician, Tottenham are striving to achieve some stability, a key aspect of most successful teams around the world. This stability needs to transpire from the top and where better place to start than the captain committing his future to the club?

The most important thing this summer for Spurs should be to address the issues surrounding squad depth. If they manage to do that, then the team will be a force to reckon with in the upcoming Premier League season.

Tottenham will also need others to step up and provide Son with some support. The soon-to-be 32-year-old cannot be expected to do the bulk of the heavy lifting all the time. Let’s wait and see how Ange goes about addressing this issue.
