Crystal Palace are keen on signing ex-Tottenham ace with wretched injury history

Crystal Palace are showing interest in signing ex-Tottenham ace Ryan Sessegnon

According to the Sun, Crystal Palace and Oliver Glasner are showing interest in signing talented but injury-prone former Tottenham defender Ryan Sessegnon on a free transfer this summer.

Once upon a time considered one of the biggest English talents coming through, Spurs signed Sessegnon from Fulham in 2019 and expected him to be the second-coming of Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale.

After all, the comparisons were there for everyone to see. An electric and pacy left-wing-back whose future seemed to be on the left wing, Spurs seemed to have signed a player who could take care of the left side of the pitch for a decade.

However, not every story has a happy ending. Despite showing flashes of his brilliance, especially under the tutelage of Antonio Conte, Sessegnon had to deal with a familiar foe more than once during his time at the N17 – persistent injuries.

Since the 2019/20 season, the 24-year-old has missed 121 matches for the club through 11 separate injuries which is frankly ridiculous. Understandably, Spurs decided to cut their losses and decided against renewing his contract.

The silver lining?

The one thing that Sessegnon has going for him is the fact that he is still just 24 years old and should not find it difficult to find himself a place to call home this summer, provided he can prove his fitness.

Can Ryan Sessegnon realise his prodigious potential?

Crystal Palace are in the midst of a large-scale transformation under impressive manager Oliver Glasner and will be preparing for life without Michael Olise for next season. Sessegnon is the kind of player who would thrive in the ex-Frankfurt manager’s system.

Could Tottenham have been more patient with Sessegnon? One really cannot fault the club here as they have persisted with him for around five seasons without much returns on their investment. The club have made a call that they think is the best for them going forward.

If Sessegnon goes on to make a career for himself at Palace, there can be nothing like that. After all, no football fan wants to see a player suffer injuries like the 24-year-old has in his short career so far. Let’s hope the player can put his injury woes behind him and realise the potential he showed as a kid which prompted us to sign him.
