Club insider tells Tottenham to sell 26-year-old star Lionel Messi labelled 'the best' only for 'world record transfer fee'

John Wenham says it must take a ‘world record transfer fee’ for Tottenham to consider selling Cristian Romero

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, owner of reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, John Wenham has claimed that the only way Tottenham Hotspur must consider parting ways with Cristian Romero is if a club made a ‘world record transfer bid’.

Cristian Romero has established himself very quickly as one of the best defenders in the Premier League. He finds himself in esteemed company alongside the likes of Ruben Dias, Virgil van Dijk and William Saliba.

After a World Cup qualifier against Ecuador last year, Lionel Messi called the Tottenham Hotspur vice-captain ‘the best defender in the world’. Liverpool icon Javier Mascherano also seconded his sentiments recently.

Alongside Micky van de Ven last season, the Argentinian World Cup winner formed an indomitable partnership at the back. Spurs struggled a lot when the duo missed out through injuries and suspensions, further underlining their value to the team.

Spurs have addressed their depth issues to an extent by bringing in Radu Dragusin during January and if his performances in the Euros for Romania are anything to go by, the club have their hands on yet another special defender.

Speaking about the player’s future at the N17 and what the club must do regarding Cristian Romero, here is what Wenham had to say

“Romero is contracted with Tottenham until 2027. As a result, I think the club would be completely within their rights to demand a world record fee for a defender. We should be looking to build the team around Romero. I think that process started last season when he was named vice-captain. Maybe we shouldn’t be putting a price on him, but if we were, it would be a ridiculous fee.”

One main differential factor that separates top football clubs from the elite ones is their ability to retain talent. If Spurs want to ditch the ‘best of the rest’ tag and truly aim for the higher echelons, they must make sure they hold on to their best players.

Right now, a case can be made for Cristian Romero being Spurs’ most important player. The vice-captain of the side has matured over the last twelve months but still has some work to do when it comes to controlling his aggression.

There are some players when they play who exhibit a passion for defending and Romero is one of them. Let’s hope he will remain at the N17 for a long time to come and hopefully, no offer prompts Daniel Levy to sell the player.
