Sergio Reguilon may decide to stay and run down his contract at Tottenham despite Turkey interest
Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed a productive summer transfer window, as Ange Postecoglou reshaped his squad.
The North London outfit splashed £124m on five new signings, including breaking the transfer record for former Bournemouth star Dominic Solanke. They also did extremely well in clearing the deck and trimming the wage bill. A few youngsters left on loan as part of the development plan while some experienced players were either released or sold. However, one player Tottenham have failed to offload thus far is Sergio Reguilon.
Sergio Reguilon, who has been with the Lilywhites since 2020, is not a part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans. The rise of Destiny Udogie has more or less shut the door at the Hotspur Way for the Spaniard. As things stand, it is difficult to see him overtake Udogie in the Spurs’ left-back pecking order.
The 2020 Europa League winner spent the last season on loan at Manchester United and Brentford, and while he did well for the former, he didn’t get an offer from the Erik ten Hag-managed club during the past summer transfer window.

Now, former Spurs scout Bryan King claims that Sergio Reguilon is not in any hurry to leave Tottenham, with the opportunity to join the Turkish Super League still available to the player. The Turkish transfer window is open until September 13, but Bryan King doesn’t understand why the 27-year-old should accept a move to a clear where he would be earning less than what he is doing at N17.
Jose Mourinho wants to reunite with Reguilon at Fenerbahce, having signed him at Spurs four years ago. Spurs also have no good reason to keep
a player who is not part of their manager’s plans, especially with the left-back position covered by Udogie and Ben Davies. However, King feels the Spaniard now ‘holds the cards’ over his future.“Reguilon still has another year left on his contract with the club,” King exclusively told Tottenham News.
“Therefore, why should he leave? This is where players and their agents can control a transfer.
“He doesn’t have to leave, but it would mean him missing a year of senior football. If he is wise, and his agent is wise, he is at an age where he will want to be playing regularly.
“However, he is on very big money at Tottenham and it depends on whether or not a Turkish club can match that. Why should he leave for less money? He holds the cards.”
With the transfer window ending in most European countries, only clubs in Greece and Turkey are able to make signings until September 11th and September 13th, respectively. It remains to be seen if those clubs entice Reguilon and whether they can afford his £53,000-per-week wages.

At 27 and perhaps into his prime, Reguilon must quickly leave Spurs to resurrect his career. It will be extremely unprofessional on his part if he decides to stay put at the club and run down his contract before leaving on a free transfer in 2025. We hope such a scenario doesn’t happen as that could lead to the Spaniard being exiled from the senior team.
