Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder turned pundit Jamie Redknapp has claimed that his former employers will be ‘relieved’ to have come out of that League Cup scare against Coventry City.
The North Londoners have endured a difficult start to their new campaign as they have aggregated only four points in the opening four games of the new Premier League season. And things could have taken a worse turn as the Championship side threatened to hovel Spurs out of the EFL Cup in only the third round when Brandon Thomas-Asante gave the West Midlands side a lead just after the hour mark.
Ange’s embarrassment highlights Spurs struggles
The Lilywhites did brilliantly to fight back and secure a comeback to net an injury time winner and secure their name on the ballot for the next round.
Djed Spence started the comeback when he equalised for the visitors in the 88th minute. And former Nottingham Forest winger Brennan Johnson secured the win with a goal two minutes into stoppage time.
Ange Postecoglou almost had a look of discomfort going into the final time as Tottenham looked down and out of the 2024/25 Carabao Cup campaign for the majority of the fixture. And that is what former Spurs midfielder Redknapp highlights speaking on Sky Sports following the full-time whistle.
Redknapp: Spurs’ League cup win a lucky escape
The 51-year-old went on to suggest that Tottenham players would not believe how they went on to come out of this with a win despite playing poorly all game. He suggested for the head coach to use this opportunity as a turning point in the season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Redknapp said: (via. Daily Mail)
“There was almost a look of embarrassment from Ange at full-time. They will be mightily relieved. They will be sitting in the dressing room thinking, “How on earth have we gotten away with that?” Coventry were the better side, and he will be so relieved. They’ve got to make sure it is a turning point for them.'”
Spurs named a heavily rotated side in the EFL Cup as Ange made eight changes to the side that faced Arsenal. Ange might not have learnt his lessons just yet. Tottenham were dumped out of the competition in the second round last year and were close to being out yesterday.
