‘Not ideal’: Postecoglou remarks on Tottenham duo’s injuries after Aston Villa win

Postecoglou provides injury updates on Richarlison and Romero

Tottenham Hotspur’s 4-1 win over Aston Villa came at the potential cost of two injuries. The South American duo of Cristian Romero and Richarlison had to be taken off after complaining of discomfort, with the latter’s case being particularly concerning given that he immediately grabbed his hamstring after assisting Dominic Solanke’s second and the team’s third goal.

That’s not to say Romero’s possible time on the sidelines will be easy to contend with given that Micky van de Ven is already on the treatment table and is expected to return only after the international break. Tottenham still have two games between now and then, one of which is a feisty UEFA Europa Conference League clash away to Galatasaray.

Following the win over Aston Villa, Ange Postecoglou was inevitably asked about his injured men. Football London quoted the former Celtic manager saying the following about Richarlison and Romero.

“I know Richy obviously felt something in the action of setting the goal up, his hamstring, so we’ll see. Romero yeah, it was in that challenge again. He felt his foot was sore. As I said it’s not ideal but, hopefully both are not too serious.”

Richarlison’s absence might not be as detrimental for Tottenham as Son Heung-min’s return to full fitness is imminent, while Timo Werner also struck his first goal of the season against Manchester City last week and will be oozing with confidence. Nevertheless, the Brazilian international will be gutted on a personal level since he had recently recovered from an injury.

Spurs will hope, however, that Romero does not face a lengthy layoff given that he is arguably their best defender. While there is no denying Micky van de Ven’s and Radu Dragusin’s qualities, they might be a bit too inexperienced in some games, not least the Premier League clash against Manchester City upon the conclusion of the international break later in November.

Moreover, the team could even be compelled to call upon Ben Davies to fill in as a centre back given their lack of options in the role, while it might not be entirely ruled out for a defensive midfielder to be used as a makeshift option either. Only time will tell the extent of Romero’s injury as well as that of Richarlison, but Postecoglou in all likelihood would be a worried man until more clarity is served.
