Tottenham Hotspur veteran defender Ben Davies has been restricted to a bits-and-parts role at White Hart Lane off late; this comes owing to the rapid and vertical system the Lilywhites have deployed under Ange Postecoglou, which focuses on proactively getting better of the opponents while catching them by surprise with pace when the situation arises. This change of style has put a hurdle on the Welshman’s minutes on the pitch.
Davies is still a respected figure in the dressing room at Hotspur Way and is a pivotal figure in a young squad. However, owing to his restricted role on the pitch, former Spurs scout Bryan King thinks that the 31-year-old will depart the North Londoners at the conclusion of the ongoing campaign.
Is this the end for Davies at Spurs?
He goes on to suggest that Tottenham-bound left-back Kevin Zenon could be brought in as a long-term replacement for Davies.
This comes amid the Lilywhites links with a move for Boca Juniors sensation who holds a £13 million release clause in his current contract with the Argentine club, and King insists that he could add ample to Ange Postecoglou’s style of play at N17.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, King said:
“Davies can play as a left-back or left-sided centre-back. He has been a great servant to Tottenham over the years. However, I imagine that he could well be one of those players moved on at the end of the season. Therefore, signing a player like this who can cover on the left will be a plus for the squad.”
Ben Davies is the longest-serving player at N17 at the moment, and he is a reliable presence to be called upon; however, his contract at White Hart Lane expires at the conclusion of the ongoing campaign, which could force the Australian head coach’s hand into moving on from the 31-year-old and rather replace him with young blood.
That being said, keeping Davies wouldn’t be a bad thing either.
