‘Dissapointing’ Tottenham star under fire for failing to rise to the challenge; out of his depth?

Welcome to English football, Tottenham Hotspur star Lucas Bergvall!

Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall had a poor outing against Galatasaray in the Europa League

Tottenham Hotspur have had an up-and-down 2024/25 campaign so far, showing they have what it takes to beat anyone on their day, but lacking consistency.

For example, the Lilywhites have been able to secure emphatic wins over the likes of Brentford, Manchester United, West Ham and Aston Villa, and also dump Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup. However, they have also had some poor outings in defeats against the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle United, Brighton and Crystal Palace.

And the north London club’s variation in performance levels was further reflected in their 3-2 defeat to Galatasaray at RAMS Park in the Europa League on Thursday. Tottenham were much better in the second half despite going a man down, with Dominic Solanke hailed after the impact he made.

One of the Spurs players who didn’t have a great night was Lucas Bergvall. Starting his third consecutive game in the Europa League, the midfielder failed to impose himself against an experienced Galatasaray side. This led to Spurs being overrun in the middle of the park in the first half, with Victor Osimhen scoring a brace.

Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King was unimpressed with the performance of Lucas Bergvall in midweek. He felt the Sweden international looked “out of his depth” in his 66-minute stay on the pitch.

“Rodrigo Bentancur did well when he came on,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.

“Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma showcased a lot of energy. However, I thought Bergvall was disappointing.

“He just looked totally out of his depth. He never got up to the pace of the game at all. However, Galatasaray isn’t an easy place to go, there is some atmosphere there.”

Ange praises 18-year-old Tottenham player after Qarabag sacrifice
Lucas Bergvall was not at his best in Spurs’ 3-2 defeat to Galatasaray

Bergvall is a young player who has serious potential and ability that we are yet to witness at Tottenham. He is just 18 years old and has plenty of time on his side to develop as a player. So, King is a bit harsh to say the Swede looked totally out of his depth against the Turkish champions.

Going to Turkey and playing in a hostile atmosphere at RAMS Park is no easy task, and Bergvall and his teammates felt that. It is easy to single out a player but pundits and former scouts often tend to forget that the entire unit fails to click together in defeats. The same happened in Turkey, so we feel the criticism of Bergvall is a bit over the top.

Nonetheless, the Stockholm-born talent needs to show much more going forward and improve if he is to get regular minutes for Ange Postecoglou’s side this season. It is clear Bergvall is far off being a finished article and Big Ange should not be in any rush to throw him into the deep end. Is it just a matter of him not being ready or is Bergvall out of his depth at Tottenham? What do you think?
