Ange Postecoglou was visibly frustrated after Tottenham’s shock 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town
Tottenham Hotspur were overwhelming favourites on paper heading into last weekend’s Premier League game against Ipswich Town. However, unsurprisingly, the Lilywhites failed to show their quality and mettle as they lost 2-1 to the Tractor Boys, who won their first game upon returning to the top flight in the summer.
Two first-half goals from Sammie Szmodics and Liam Delap were enough to see the newly promoted side register their first Premier League win in 22 years. The result came as a huge blow to Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou, who was visibly not in a good mood after the full-time whistle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The result meant the north London club went into the international break tenth in the table, having accumulated just 16 points from their opening eleven games.
Former Crystal Palace and Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has revealed that he is worried about Ange Postecoglou, as the Greek-Australian looked ‘crestfallen’ after the defeat. The 59-year-old is under pressure to change Spurs’ fortunes around and Pardew expressed concerns about the veteran tactician and his position at the Hotspur Way following his post-match press conference.
“The one thing I would say is, listening to Ange’s interview after the game, and I couldn’t actually hear the words, because we were talking and discussing other stuff, but he looked crestfallen. I’ve not seen him look that down,” Pardew said on talkSPORT.
“You know, he looked really down today, and that’s a bit of a worry for me because we’re only 11 games into the season, and when you have a bad performance as a manager, looking crestfallen isn’t the greatest gift you could give to your fans.”
Big Ange did not make any excuses after the painful loss to Ipswich, admitting that he is ultimately responsible for the side’s lack of consistency. The buck stops with the manager at the end of the day and the 59-year-old vowed to fix that glaring problem, asserting that he could help his players overcome this weakness.
As Tottenham are not looking capable of getting results consistently and building winning momentum, there is an increasing number of fans voicing their discontent with Big Ange and his coaching staff. However, to put things into perspective, we are only three points behind third and fourth place Chelsea and Arsenal, respectively, and that is bridgeable if Big Ange’s side can go on a winning run after the international break.
