3 players Tottenham need to move on in January

Tottenham suffered another defeat at the weekend, this time at the hands of Ipswich Town, who in the process won their first league game of the season.

It’s not a good look for Ange Postecoglou and Co. As was evident last year, the Australian head coach’s “exciting” football cuts both ways, and for Tottenham it’s resulting in way too many stumbles.

However, the Lilywhites remain a threatening bunch and are just three points off top four in the league. If they can navigate the festive period with a bit of finesse, they will have all to play for in the second half of the season.

In this article, we present to you our top three picks of players Tottenham need to move on in the January transfer window.

For simplicity’s sake, we are assuming that Postecoglou will remain at the helm when the window comes around.

Sergio Reguilón

This one is probably the easiest call. Despite being told to pack his bags in the summer, Reguilón remains on Spurs’ books. Come January, he’ll be able to speak to other clubs regarding a Bosman move next summer.

But neither he nor Spurs should wait for that to happen. The club must look at the reality and realise that terminating his contract and not paying half-a-season worth of wages will be the wiser thing to do. In that same vein, Reguilón will get opportunities to at least get some game minutes as clubs tend to looks at the January window as a market for desperate, short-term moves, and he should take whatever comes his way.

Djed Spence

Djed Spence was handed a contract extension in the summer after he seemingly impressed Postecoglou during pre-season. What exactly impressed the Spurs head coach, however, remains a matter of mystery, as Spence has hardly featured for his team.

Spence was one of the stars of Nottingham Forest’s promotion run in 2021/22. His recent loan spells also suggest that there is a market for him. If Postecoglou does not trust him enough to give him minutes while his team try to challenge on multiple fronts, for his own sake Spence needs to move on to pastures anew.

Richarlison

Richarlison is now in his third season at Spurs. He is trusted enough by Postecoglou to get minutes off the bench, and one sympathises with him and can only credit him for having the courage to speak about his mental health issues. But the brutal reality of football has shown us that at 27 Richarlison is a rapidly deteriorating asset, far from realising the potential he was showing during his Watford days.

Spurs are going to have to offload Richarlison as soon as they get the chance to cut their losses while interest remains in the Brazilian forward in favour of younger, different players.
