Journo outlines ‘obvious’ Tottenham thoughts of retaining Ange Postecoglou

Ange Postecoglou’s job is safe for now at Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 2-1 by newly promoted Ipswich Town at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, a result which marked the Tractor Boys’ first Premier League win of the 2024.25 season.

Ange Postecoglou isn’t having the best of times at White Hart Lane right now. Spurs sit tenth in the Premier League after the disastrous defeat to Ipswich Town. While they are only three points behind third-place Chelsea, picking up 16 points from 11 matches is not good enough for a club that invested well in the transfer market.

Thus, it would be fair to assume that Ange Postecoglou is under some kind of pressure after a series of inconsistent results. The latest setback intensified scrutiny on the Greek-Australian tactician, who has taken responsibility for the team’s inconsistent start to the season.

The Lilywhites’ early 2024/25 campaign struggles have drawn speculation from the media and pundits over Big Ange’s future in north London. However, Evening Standard correspondent Dan Kilpatrick has quashed the suggestion that Big Ange is under any immediate pressure at the club. Indeed, as per him, all the noises coming out of Tottenham propose that the club are accepting of the fact that this is a ‘medium-term’ project and the head coach’s plans may take some time to bear fruit.

“So, I don’t know what Levy and the board are thinking. To be honest, I think all the noises from the club, that they sort of accept that this is a medium-term venture,” Kilpatrick said on the Tottenham Way podcast.

“I mean, they’ve talked about being successful in the here and now, but they’ve also talked about building a squad, that they want to be successful in four or five years’ time.

“And that’s been obvious in the age profile of the players they’ve signed, the three teenagers over the summer, two more coming next year.

“So, I think that there is a kind of commitment to see this through, or at least keep saying where it goes. But again, I can understand anyone associated with Spurs who’s losing a bit of patience or getting frustrated.”

It has been an incredibly frustrating season for the Spurs fans to witness. At times, Big Ange’s men have been scintillating to watch, playing free-flowing, aggressive and attacking football and securing big wins over the likes of Manchester United, Aston Villa and Manchester City.

However, they have also handed Crystal Palace and Ipswich their first Premier League wins of the season. Therefore, fans are guaranteed to be frustrated by this alarming lack of inconsistency and the coach’s inability to fix the gaping problems in defence. The 59-year-old and his coaching staff have to address the issues that have held Tottenham back.

For now, it looks as though Big Ange will remain in charge and it is good to see Daniel Levy having more patience with him, but if the veteran tactician wants to keep his job, he needs to start getting our team to perform more consistently.
