Tottenham ready 2025 Bosman raid for Bundesliga winning star on Real Madrid’s radar

Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah linked with a move to Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur’s hugely inconsistent start to the season has put Ange Postecoglou in a spot of bother. The shock 2-1 defeat to Premier League newboys Ipswich Town has seen Ange Postecoglou and his Spurs team receive criticism from pretty much every corner of the world.

Given their struggles at the back, the Lilywhites have work to do in the January transfer window. Cristian Romero has not even been close to his best this season, Micky van de Ven is currently out with a thigh problem and Radu Dragusin has failed to step up when called upon in recent games. This leaves a lot to be desired defensively, with Spurs leaking goals for fun under Ange Postecoglou.

According to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Tottenham are among a host of Premier League clubs interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah. They are believed to have spoken to the intermediaries, perhaps trying to gauge how much the defender could cost in January.

Jonathan Tah will become a free agent at the end of the ongoing season as his contract at Bayer Leverkusen expires in June (Transfermarkt). The defender, whose summer move to Bayern Munich failed to materialize, was one of Xabi Alonso’s stars last term, playing a crucial role in Leverkusen’s Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double.

The Germany international scored six goals in 48 appearances across all competitions for Alonso’s side. In what has been an up-and-down season for Leverkusen, Tah may not have been at his best but he certainly will be a hot property when entering the market in 2025. The centre-back made it clear in September itself that he doesn’t intend to sign a new contract at Bay Arena, potentially boosting the suitors in getting their man—either in a cut-price deal in January or on a free transfer in the summer.

Spurs are set to face fierce competition from Premier League and European clubs to secure Tah’s signature. As Real Madrid are expected to intensify their efforts to sign Romero during the mid-season trading period, Tah would be a decent replacement for the Argentinean at the Hotspur Way.

Could Spurs replace Real Madrid-linked Cristian Romero with Jonathan Tah?

Reports suggest a January move for Leverkusen’s defensive wall could cost clubs a transfer fee of around €15 million. Now, whether Spurs would be willing to spend so much on a player who would be available for free in six months is the big question.

As Daniel Levy has been historically reluctant to enter the January market for fresh faces, and with big plans for the summer of 2025, he should alter his plans this time around and look for cost-effective solutions in the winter to address Big Ange’s problems in the defensive unit. Tah, in that regard, may just be perfect for Spurs.
