Tottenham star Sergio Reguilon garnering interest from Getafe and Sevilla

Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon has fallen out of favour at the club and is no longer a part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans. In spite of loan spells at Manchester United and Brentford since 2023, he has failed to earn himself a berth in the manager’s setup and consequently, has been frozen out. Given that his contract expires next year in June, he will be free to sign a pre-contract in January.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Tottenham have not ruled out the termination of Reguilon’s contract by mutual consent, in which case a couple of La Liga sides, Getafe and Sevilla, could register their interest in bringing him in. The Spaniard has already spent some time with Sevilla before, while a move to Getafe could allow him to live in the city of his birth, Madrid.

Sergio Reguilon’s contract termination is likely to hinge heavily on the number of defensive options Ange Postecoglou has in the winter, given that he is currently without Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. Destiny Udogie has also had his fair share of minor fitness struggles but if the Italian were to face some time out on the sidelines in the near future, Spurs would be forced to retain their £53,000 per week outcast until the summer.

It is unpleasant to see what has come of Reguilon’s situation at Tottenham Hotspur because under Jose Mourinho and during his days as a Real Madrid player, he had displayed the potential to become one of the world’s best left backs. However, quite unfortunately, he fell into Spurs’ trap of changing managers and was unable to adapt to the rapidly changing tactical systems, which eventually led to the demise of his career in north London under Ange Postecoglou.

At 27, however, Reguilon still has the majority of his career ahead of him, including his prime years and so there will be hope from those close to the player that he will be able to turn a corner in his next venture. A return to Spain would be the ideal option for Reguilon as he would play in a familiar setting with significantly less pressure than that of the Premier League.
