Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra is on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur may be forced to dip their toes in the January transfer window after a poor start to the 2024/25 season.
With 11 games done and dusted, the Lilywhites are 10th in the table but only three points adrift of third-place Chelsea. The mid-season trading period is often viewed as a window of opportunity for many clubs and Spurs could benefit from it, especially after the difficult start they have endured.
According to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Tottenham are among several Premier League clubs to have scouted Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra. The young Spaniard has been linked with moves to La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona in the past 12 months, but is now attracting interest from English sides.
Javi Guerra began his footballing career with the Villarreal youth academy before moving to Valencia’s system in 2019. He penned his first professional contract with Valencia in 2021. In May 2023, the midfielder extended his stay at the Mestalla Stadium until 2027 (Transfermarkt).
The Spanish under-21 international enjoyed his breakthrough campaign with Los Che last season, scoring four goals and supplying an assist in 40 appearances across all competitions. Guerra, who is likened to former Spain maestro Xabi Alonso, has grown in stature in the last 15 to 18 months and the interest from top Spanish and English clubs is a testament to that.
The Gilet-born talent has a €100million release clause in his contract, but the aforementioned report adds that Valencia may be willing to sell him at €30million or less in 2025.
Tottenham must step up their interest in Guerra due to their failure to replace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso in the summer. They brought in young guns such as Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray earlier this year, but Ange Postecoglou appear to be sceptical in handing them regular minutes in the Premier League.
Midfield could become a position of need for the north Londoners with James Maddison not displaying the best of forms and Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-game domestic ban looming large. And that is exactly why Postecoglou should lead the charge for a potential new midfield acquisition.
Guerra, in that regard, would be a smart fit at Spurs. The Spaniard could be a useful addition to compete with the likes of Bentancur and Bissouma whilst enhancing the depth of the squad. Given he is just 21, the Valencia man would also fit the profile of signings the north London club have been making in recent years.
