Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to make a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah in the upcoming winter transfer window as the North Londoners look to pry him away from his current employers in a possible bargain deal.
There is a need to bring in a new central defender at White Hart Lane with Ange Postecoglou’s side light at the back. The North Londoners have Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven as dignified starters at the heart of defence; however, there is a certain lack of depth at the back, with Radu Dragusin being the only qualitative cover for the aforementioned two. Veteran defender Ben Davies can be called up on as well.
Spurs’ January move for Tah blocked
However, this lack of depth has been a cause of concern for Tottenham for some time, and Australian head coach Ange Postecoglou has been calling for recruitment at the back. And Daniel Levy has been looking to address this issue by bringing in Jonathan Tah, who has been putting in consistent performances for Bayer Leverkusen over the years.
The 28-year-old not only brings much-needed experience but also is a physical presence at the back and would provide much-needed depth and competition for places in the heart of defence.
While Tottenham are hoping to secure his services for a bargain fee in the upcoming winter transfer window, a recent report via. Spanish outlet AS, the German champions aren’t willing to entertain a January departure. This will come as a blow to Levy given Spurs urgency to bolster their central defensive options.
Xabi Alonso’s reluctance to keep hold of Tah, despite his contract situation, shows that the German club values his contributions and would rather have him leave on a free transfer in the summer window.
