Tottenham defender Cristian Romero is a major doubt vs Manchester City
As Tottenham Hotspur prepare for a daunting Premier League clash against Manchester City, fresh doubts surrounding the availability of Cristian Romero have cast a shadow over their defensive prospects.
The central defender had to be taken off at half-time in Argentina’s 2-1 defeat to Paraguay in World Cup Qualifiers last week and it is believed that he may suffered a recurrence of the foot injury sustained against Aston Villa.
As a result, the 26-year-old will not be with the Argentina team for Tuesday’s World Cup Qualifier against Peru. Reputed Argentinean journalist Gaston Edul posted on his X account that Cristian Romero has been released from the national team and will return to Tottenham.
The South American was a major doubt for Tottenham’s home game against Ipswich Town before the international break, yet he proved his fitness and managed to play the entire 90 minutes. Having teamed up with his national team and played only 45 minutes of Argentina’s defeat to Paraguay, it appears as though he might have aggravated that injury.
Spurs perhaps were forced to rush Romero back into action against Ipswich Town after Micky van de Ven suffered yet another hamstring injury. Therefore, some sections of the Spurs fanbase might question why the defender was first risked in the defeat to the Tractor Boys before giving him the green signal to represent Argentina for the November games.
Now, both Ange Postecoglou and Lionel Scaloni will shoulder the blame should Romero face an extended period on the sidelines. Releasing him from the Argentina camp was the right decision and the Tottenham medical department must now evaluate the defender to find out the severity of his injury.
The 2022 World Cup winner’s potential absence could prove costly for Big Ange’s side. While the centre-back’s recovery pace and reading of the game have been vital to Tottenham’s attempts to play a high defensive line, his potential miss could leave gaps that the opposition could exploit with minimal fuss.

Big Ange and Spurs fans will be hoping Romero’s injury is not serious, and if he’s deemed not fully fit, our boss should not risk the defender against Man City in the Premier League at the weekend. Leaving Romero out for a game or two to help him heal would be ideal rather than risk losing him to a long-term injury.
