Tottenham have concerns over Cristian Romero amid Real Madrid interest

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou fails to shy away from Cristian Romero admission.

Former scout Mick Brown addresses Cristian Romero “concerns” at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur have endured an underwhelming start to the 2024/25 Premier League season despite spending well in the summer transfer window.

Ange Postecoglou will be desperate to turn things around after Spurs’ shock 2-1 defeat to newly promoted Ipswich Town before the international break. Injuries have not been kind to the north Londoners with some key players currently on the treatment table.

The Lilywhites are also having concerns with the fitness of Cristian Romero, who came off at half-time in Argentina’s 2-1 defeat to Paraguay in a World Cup qualifier last week. The defender has been released early from the Argentina national team camp ahead of their game against Peru. He is now doubtful for Spurs’ big Premier League game against Manchester City at the weekend.

Compounding further misery, recent reports suggest Real Madrid are planning to reignite their interest in Cristian Romero owing to their defensive crisis. Now, it appears Tottenham could be open to selling the Argentinean centre-back in 2025.

Ex-Tottenham scout Mick Brown has revealed that there are “concerns” at Spurs regarding Romero and that CEO Daniel Levy would be open to selling him next year, provided he manages to land an adequate replacement.

“If the interest from Real Madrid is genuine, they’ve got a decision to make,” Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider.

“There are some concerns about him at Tottenham because of their defensive issues.

“Now, there are a number of reasons for those issues and the blame isn’t solely on him, but as a big part of that defence, there are question marks about his performances.

“He’s also error-prone which is something the team can’t really afford to carry in their situation.”

The transfer insider has praised teams like Manchester City and Arsenal for having a strong base at the back. He feels Romero is not reliable enough in defence to build a stable team and that Spurs may cash in on him if they get a huge fee.

“If you look at teams like Arsenal and Man City, the top teams, their stability is built on players like William Saliba and Ruben Dias,” he added.

“These are players that you know, in the heart of your defence, you can rely on.

“Is Romero that sort of player for Tottenham? Not for me.

“So, I think they could look at think, if we can get big money, we’ll take it and reinvest in a player who might provide that stability.

“It might not be worth the risk of destabilising the back line unless it’s big money though, it needs to be enough to reinvest properly.”

Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero is on the radar of Real Madrid.

Romero has been a key member of this Spurs side since arriving from Serie A Atalanta as part of a £42m deal back in 2021. The South American has developed into one of the world’s best defenders in recent years, however, he hasn’t been close to his best this season.

Part of the Ange Postecoglou-managed side’s defensive struggles have been down to Romero’s poor form. The 2022 World Cup winner has been rash with his decision-making off the ball and made several unforced errors which have resulted in goals.

While he undoubtedly remains one of the best in his position, the north Londoners should cash in on Romero if they receive an eye-watering bid from Real Madrid. The centre-back is 26 and has a contract at White Hart Lane until 2027 (Transfermarkt), so one would expect him to fetch a sizeable fee next year.

And by selling the Argentinean international, Spurs would be wise to re-invest that money in signing a young defender with high potential.
