Injuries to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven could force Ange Postecoglou to start Ben Davies in central defence against Man City
With the international break now over, Tottenham Hotspur will resume their Premier League duties with a daunting trip to the Etihad Stadium to face defending champions Manchester City on Saturday.
The Lilywhites entered the November international break off the back of a shock 2-1 defeat to newly promoted Ipswich Town. The loss left them 10th in the Premier League table, although Ange Postecoglou’s side are only three points off the final UEFA Champions League spot.
Spurs will fancy their chances of securing a top-four spot this season and returning to the elite Champions League competition. However, they have several injury problems to deal with ahead of their return to Premier League action against Man City.
Micky van de Ven was ruled out until after the international break owing to a hamstring injury suffered in the 4-1 win over Aston Villa. So, the Dutchman faces a late fitness test ahead of Saturday’s game.
In addition, Ange Postecoglou suffered a big blow during the recently concluded international break as Cristian Romero was forced off with an injury in Argentina’s 2-1 defeat to Paraguay in a World Cup qualifier. The Argentina camp decided to release the defender early last week and he returned to N17, and as things stand, Romero is a major doubt for the clash with the champions.
John Wenham—the owner of the famous Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose—feels Ange Postecoglou could go with Ben Davies in central defence against Man City. The club insider trusts the experienced defender to come in and do a job for the visitors.
“I do wonder whether Davies might come back into the starting lineup against City,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“In the games he has played, where he has been asked to fill in at centre-back, he has hardly let us down.
“However, from Spurs’ point of view, it is very frustrating to lose Romero to injury.”
Going to Man City potentially without starting centre-backs Romero and Van de Ven will leave Spurs fans extremely worried. Ben Davies has done a decent job whenever called upon by the gaffer, using his volumes of experience to good effect.

If both Romero and Van de Ven fail to recover in time, Big Ange will have no option but to start the Wales international alongside Radu Dragusin, who was heavily criticised for his performance in the defeat to Ipswich Town. Should Davies get the nod to start at the heart of Tottenham’s defence, he will be raring to make an impression.
