Tim Sherwood expresses Tottenham star concern amid Madrid interest

Michael Bridges says Pedro Porro has been the 'standout performer' for Tottenham this term.

Tottenham right-back Pedro Porro has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid

Tottenham Hotspur star Pedro Porro has performed well this season and looks as if he will be the first-choice right-back for Spain with Real Madrid star Dani Carvajal out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.

Having established himself as one of the best right-backs in the Premier League in the last 12 to 15 months, he has seen his stock rise. The Spaniard is now being linked with a move away from White Hart Lane, with defending La Liga champions Real Madrid particularly keen on him if their pursuit of Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold fails.

Real Madrid are expected to dip in the winter transfer market to reinforce their defensive unit in the absence of Carvajal, who will miss the remainder of the campaign after rupturing his ACL and will need replacement in due time as he is 32.

Alexander-Arnold is the European champions’ first-choice option to replace Carvajal. The England international’s contract at Anfield expires in the summer, although Liverpool will definitely try to tie him down to a new deal owing to his world-class attributes and leadership skills. This could mean Madrid have to search elsewhere for alternatives, and Porro is surely one of those.

Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood has expressed his concerns about Porro leaving N17 should Madrid come calling for his signature. Despite being critical of the Spanish international early into his White Hart Lane career, the football commentator and pundit could see Los Blancos luring Porro away from Spurs to Santiago Bernabeu.

“There’s always a worry, though, when you’re doing a job like Ange [Postecoglou] has done, and you’re signing the right players and playing them in the correct way, automatically those players are going to attract interest from big clubs,” Sherwood spoke at the launch of Ladbrokes’ “Gaffer of all Accas” (h/t CaughtOffside).

“Pedro Porro is somebody who I was critical of when I first saw him playing, under Antonio Conte, but he was being asked to play as a conventional right-back, and that’s not where his assets lie. His assets lie in going forward, picking the ball up in midfield with plenty of energy, power, and good deliveries, and there’s lots of teams out there at the moment who are looking for that kind of player… Real Madrid being one of them.

“Whether it’s going to be Trent Alexander-Arnold or Pedro Porro… maybe the fact he’s Spanish might come into things, so that is something that would concern me in the next couple of windows.”

Porro made no secret of his desire to join Real Madrid in the recently concluded international break. The 25-year-old’s ambitions to play for Los Blancos are hardly surprising, given Madrid are the zenith of the footballing world for most of the players. Tottenham will be sweating on Porro’s future but they appear to be working behind the scenes to sign his potential replacement.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s Tariq Lamptey is viewed as a potential replacement for Porro. Injuries are a concern for Lamptey, who has missed 94 games in total at Brighton since arriving from Chelsea as a teenager back in January 2020.

That the Ghana international is into the final year of his contract (Transfermarkt) means the Seagulls are not convinced about handing him fresh terms, so if the Hotspur Way chiefs are interested, the South Coast club will be more than willing to cash him in during the January transfer window and pick up a nominal fee.
